Solving the Integrated Airline Recovery Problem Using Column-and-Row Generation
نویسنده
چکیده
Airline recovery presents very large and difficult problems requiring high quality solutions within very short time limits. To improve computational performance, various solution approaches have been employed, including decomposition methods and approximation techniques. There has been increasing interest in the development of efficient and accurate solution techniques to solve an integrated airline recovery problem. In this paper, an integrated airline recovery problem is developed, integrating the schedule, crew and aircraft recovery stages, and is solved using column-and-row generation. A general framework for column-and-row generation is presented as an extension of current generic methods. This extension considers multiple secondary variables and linking constraints and is proposed as an alternative solution approach to Benders’ decomposition. The application of column-and-row generation to the integrated recovery problem demonstrates the improvement in the solution runtimes and quality compared to a standard column generation approach. Columnand-row generation improves solution runtimes by reducing the problem size and thereby achieving faster execution of each LP solve. As a result of this evaluation, a number of general enhancement techniques are identified to further reduce the runtimes of column-and-row generation. This paper also details the integration of the row generation procedure with branch-and-price, which is used to identify integral optimal solutions.

A novel passenger recovery approach for the integrated airline recovery problem
Schedule disruptions require airlines to intervene through the process of recovery; this involves modifications to the planned schedule, aircraft routings, crew pairings and passenger itineraries. Passenger recovery is generally considered as the final stage in this process, and hence passengers experience unnecessarily large impacts resulting from flight delays and cancellations. Most recovery...
متن کاملCockpit Crew Pairing Problem in Airline Scheduling: Shortest Path with Resources Constraints Approach
Increasing competition in the air transport market has intensified active airlines’ efforts to keep their market share by attaching due importance to cost management aimed at reduced final prices. Crew costs are second only to fuel costs on the cost list of airline companies. So, this paper attempts to investigate the cockpit crew pairing problem. The set partitioning problem has been used for ...
متن کاملConstraint-specific recovery network for solving airline recovery problems
In this paper, we consider the recovery of an airline schedule after an unforeseen event called disruption, making the planned schedule infeasible. We present a modeling framework that allows the consideration of operational constraints within a Column Generation (CG) scheme. We introduce the general concept of recovery network, generated for each individual unit of the problem, and show how un...
متن کاملSolving the Airline Recovery Problem By Using Ant Colony Optimization
In this paper an Ant Colony (ACO) algorithm is developed to solve aircraft recovery while considering disrupted passengers as part of objective function cost. By defining the recovery scope, the solution always guarantees a return to the original aircraft schedule as soon as possible which means least changes to the initial schedule and ensures that all downline affects of the disruption are ...
متن کاملSolving a robust airline crew pairing problem with column generation
In this study, we solve a robust version of the airline crew pairing problem. Our concept of robustness was partially shaped during our discussions with small local airlines in Turkey which may have to add a set of extra flights into their schedule at short notice during operation. Thus, robustness in this case is related to the ability of accommodating these extra flights at the time of operat...
